UK techno figure and Tresor artist Phil Wells has passed away last Thursday, December 6th. One-half of the legendary duo Subhead, Mr. Wells was 52.
Phil Wells - A Tribute.
Subhead was born in the mid-nineties from collaboration between Jason Leach and Phil Wells. Based in London from at the start, the duo even counted electronic chameleon Jamie Lidell as a third member for a short time. But the core of Subhead remained Leach and Wells over the years, also making Tokyo their home for a period around the millennium. Their catalogue of more than 40 vinyl releases includes a heroic full-lenth album on Tresor “Neon Rocka “ (Tresor.152) as well as two EP’s “Arucknophobia “ in 2000 (Tresor.144) and “Baby Takes Three” in 2001 (Tresor.178).
Their live shows are internationally known for their uncompromising, hard-edged technology mixed with pumping, raw, funk-powered, hip-hop/hi-hat sounds that the Subhead team coined as “ruckin’”. Anyone who has seen their intense shows knows the fervor and dynamic tension that was spun from this unique partnering of talent. A genuine pulse in the heart of techno, Phil explained their wildly experimental and rowdy version of electronica as “punchy but weird...like us”.
We will miss Phil, as a great talent, as a member of the Tresor family, and as a warm, sincere person who was always in our home. We extend our deepest sympathies to Phil Wells’ immediate family and close friends.
*Note: the planned Subhead date in Tresor Club on Friday, 21 December will go ahead, with Jason Leach playing solo in tribute to Phil Wells.
